Getting Around Waikiki

Honolulu International (HNL) Airport is where many dream vacations begin as the major aviation center for the Hawaiian Islands. HNL airport is located on the island of Oahu around four miles west of downtown Honolulu and nine miles from the legendary Waikiki Beach. Honolulu airport is served by over 20 major domestic and international airlines and is a hub for Aloha Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines. All overseas flights arrive in the Main Overseas Terminal and connecting flights to other islands depart from the Interisland Terminal or the Commuter Terminal. The Wiki-Wiki Express is a free shuttle that connects the HNL terminal buildings. Or, if you wish to stretch your legs after the long flight to the islands, the Interisland Terminal is a 10-15 minute walk from the Main Overseas Terminal. Add on an extra 5-10 minutes to walk to the Commuter Terminal.

After the ocean crossing, no doubt you'll be eager to get settled as soon as possible. The two most common, most affordable means of transportation are multi-passenger buses and rental cars.

There are several different companies providing bus service to Waikiki. You will find the large buses in front of the baggage claim area across from the first lane of traffic. The bus stop is clearly marked and the current fare is $8.00 per person one-way.

Transportation to and from Waikiki and just about everywhere else on Oahu is very simple. Buses are plentiful. Trolleys run specifically for the convenience of visitors. Packaged tours provide your transportation to virtually all scheduled destinations. Rent-a-cars are available at dozens of locations. And you will find many destinations are within easy walking distance from your hotel.

The easiest way to get to where you want to go, however, may well be with a taxi. Taxis arrive almost immediately after being called, or will pick you up at the time you specify. You can name your destination and relax, not having to worry about whether you're on the right bus or if the trolley you've taken will get you to the right place. You won't have to transfer to another taxi as you may have to do via bus. Your driver - even if his English is limited - will answer your questions and, if you ask, will identify landmarks for you. Taxi drivers are "ambassadors of aloha." They are proud of their island and enjoy pointing out landmarks and places of interest as they take you to your destination. You might even consider a taxi or Limo tour of the island's highlights, based on the things that interest you most. Any taxi company will be glad to give you a quote for that.
